Robert Milburn son of Robert Milburn on his marriage certificate in 1847 but his son's marriage certificate gives Robert Thomas Milburn son of Robert Thomas Milburn (which I think must be incorrect).

The marriage certificate gave Robert, the groom as an Engineer residing at Liverpool and his father Robert was a Mariner. Robert junior was a Master Mariner in 1847 and his father a Custum House Officer, it does not look as this was the correct first marriage.

Although the IGI records James, according to the 1841 Census it would seem that it was Charles as being baptised on this date the son of John and Sarah. If the IGI was correct, then John and Sarah would have had 2 children named James both living. If the Census was correct then although John and Sarah had 2 children named Charles, the eldest had died well before the second Charles was named. Also in the 1881 Census there was a Charles F.(?Ford) Bishop aged 52 and born Greenwich living on the IOW.

From the birth certificate of Mary Ann Bishop, the informant was the mother, Mary Ann Bishop. I was surprised to see that Thomas Samuel was a Master Mariner, when the following year he was an unemployed Waterman.
Thomas Samuel was definitely a Waterman, in fact a Master Waterman.
He was apprenticed to John James Thorne, his binding date was 13th January 1848 (from the affidavit records of the Company of Watermen & Lightermen of the River Thames). His freedom was granted on 13th October 1859. The normal period of apprenticeship was seven years and boys had to be over 14 and under 20 at the time of the binding. He was a Master Waterman, as on 8th October 1861, a Robert Allert of Poplar was apprenticed to him, gaining his freedom on 12th February 1867 - possibly had other apprentices, but only have a note of this one.
Maybe his wife got confused with Master Mariner and Master Waterman, when registering the birth of their daughter.
