Thomas Geere born at Wivelsfield in 1559, married Barbara Berde at Barcombe. They moved to Rottingdean, where his two sisters Ann and Elizabeth were married. Their eldest children were born at Rottingdean, but by about 1600 Thomas had moved again, to Ovingdean where the younger children were born. The family were probably tenant farmers of Ovingdean Farm, living in Ovingdean Grange, but no definite proof of this.

The Berde (Beard) family had close links with the Geeres, there having been several marriages between the two families.
