Death certificate gives Samuel Bishop, fisherman of Brewhouse Lane aged 83 years and Samuel's son Robert present at the death.

33. Eleanor (Helen) Hinderson was born about 1763/1764. She died 18 Mar 1843 in Crowley's Wharf, Greenwich, Kent from Hydrothorax and was buried 25 Mar 1843 in St. Alphege, Greenwich, Kent.

Although I had been looking for a death/burial of Eleanor Bishop, the wife/widow of Samuel, I found a burial of a Helen Bishop of Crowley's wharf, Greenwich who was aged 78 years. At the same time I found a burial of Samuel Bishop of Brewhouse Lane in 1840 who was 83 years old. With Samuel living at Brewhouse Lane I am sure this is my Samuel, even though his age is different. It looks as if the vicar or an informant made a guess at his age - in those days people were often unsure of the date of birth/age. I cannot see that there could be another Samuel Bishop living at that address at that age. Again his widow has been recorded as Helen whereas at her marriage it was Eleanor - many people could not read or write and names are often recorded as the vicar imagined they were told - so either christian name could be correct.
Probably both Samuel and Eleanor lived at Brewhouse Lane, but when Samuel died Eleanor probably went to live with her son John who lived at Crowley's wharf.
In 1841 she was living in Brewhouse Lane, of independent means, with granddaughters Emma and Isabella Bishop.
Death certificate gives Helen Bishop, aged 79 years and John Bishop of Crowley's Wharf present at the death. Burial gave aged 78 years.

The Ovingdean Geeres

The Geere family were Puritans. Thomas's wife was Mercy Doe and Mercy was a
Puritan name.
A popular but unproven legend in the Geere family is that they helped Charles II
to escape in 1651. It alleges that Charles II appeared from under a chestnut
tree in Ovingdean churchyard and asked Betsey to help him. She asked her
father, Thomas Geere, and they put him up for a night or more. Betsey was
said to have had a son, the very picture of the King, wait for it, about nine
months later. In 1660, after the restoration, Charles II sent a snuff box and
other rewards for their help. In a history of Ovingdean there is a mention in a
list of residents of the High Street, of a Mr. Gear who claimed to have a snuff
box given by Charles II.
Betsey would be Elizabeth Geere, and Elizabeth Geere, the daughter of Diones
and Elizabeth of Ovingdean, of a suitable age, was 19 in 1651. Her parents had
emigrated to America in 1635 and probably left Betsey aged 3, and her sister
Sarah aged one, with their uncle Thomas and Mary Geere of Ovingdean, but
Thomas had moved to Falmer and died in 1650. So was it Thomas Geere junior,
about 29 years old who had married Mercy Doe and was living at Ovingdean
Grange (opposite the church), and had Betsey living with them. Since this
legend has been passed down by word of mouth, it is quite possible that cousin
Betsey has become daughter Betsey at some stage. Ovingdean registers have
been lost up to 1711 and BTs lost between 1640 and 1685, so there is no record
of a birth of her son or her burial, also no trace of a marriage or marriage licence
- Betsey probably died young.
Thomas and Mercy were buried at Ovingdean where their graves, although
dating from the 17th century, may still be found. They are amongst the oldest
identifiable there, near the church door, mounted on Sussex brick plinths.
Ovingdean Grange was the location for Harrison Ainsworth's novel about Charles
II, in which a Geere is the fictional butler at the Grange.

Ann Geer, who married John Fleming in 1780 was the 3rd great granddaughter
of Thomas Geere, junior of Ovingdean.
